Everyone has beliefs about themselves that stop them from trying new things. For example, if you hold the belief that you will never be any good at long distance running, then it’s very unlikely you will ever win a marathon, and so you won’t even make a start.

Not winning a marathon isn’t such a big deal to most people, so it won’t have too much of an effect on your life in general. However, there are toxic beliefs that do have negative effects and can stop you from reaching your full potential.

Here are my 5 strategies that you can use to unload yourself of these limiting and toxic beliefs:

1. I’m too old, or I’ve left it too late.

Sometimes you just have to accept that it is too late. If you’re over 50, you can safely scratch the Olympic high jump gold medal off the cards. However, the truth of the matter is that there are far more things you can do, then there are things that you can’t. You just have to be a little more realistic in your goal setting.

Colonel Sanders struck gold with his chicken recipe; but not until he was 49 years old. Now Kentucky Fried Chicken is a household name.  There have been a few medical students that didn’t get started until their 60’s.

Avoid jumping to conclusions regarding your age. You can do a lot more than you think.

2. Failure is a bad thing.

Everyone alive today has failed at something at some point in their lives. If you look at failure in a different light, as a learning experience, or a guiding light for changing direction, you will constantly improve and eventually achieve success.

3. You’ve failed in the past, so why should the future be any different?

An amazing trait you possess as a human is the ability to adapt to change. If in the past, you were lazy, made poor choices, lacked social skills, or participated in self-destructive behaviour, that doesn’t mean that the future has to be more of the same.

As Tony Robbins says “The Past Doesn’t Equal the Future”.  You have the power to free yourself from the shackles of the past and start living your life in the present.

4. I will get laughed at or criticised.

Yes, you will. It’s true that people can be cruel and there are always going to be those who will just want to bring you down. But why should you care? You don’t have time to be bogged down in their negative muck so stop living like you’re still in high school and forget about peer pressure. Just do what needs to be done, and ignore the naysayers.

5. I’m not smart enough, hopeless with money, lack social skills etc.

No one is good at everything. However, you can learn to become better at something that is important to you.  If you need a particular skill to achieve your dream, then go out and learn it. The library is full of books that teach new skills, or you could take a class.

Don’t know anything about finances and investing? Find a mentor. Once you take the time to get to know a successful person you might be surprised at how perfectly normal they are. Once you realise this then you begin to see that your ability to live a successful life is indeed possible.

Toxic beliefs do nothing but hold you back from your true potential and the life you deserve. While they can be hard to pin down simply because they have been with you so long, it’s important that you take stock of yourself and discover those beliefs which may be limiting you. Confront them for the lies they are and then get rid of them and start living the life you know you can.
