Misery is an emotion. It can also become a habit.  Your mental habits play a huge role in how happy and successful you are. Turning that frown upside down is easy though.

All you have to do is change these mental habits that are negatively impacting your life. Start with these, and inject the happiness back into your life.

1. Comparing yourself to other people

There’s always going to be someone that’s much better off than you are. That’s life. Comparing yourself to them won’t change anything. This is such a detrimental mental habit.

Strive to make progress in your life, not dwell on what others have that you wish you did. Or how hard-done-by you are.

2. Always seeking approval

You can’t please everyone. You might be the nicest person in the world, but there will still be people that don’t like you. Make the choices that you believe are correct. Have that as your mental habit.

Don’t worry about what others think. Making them happy will only make you miserable.

3. Procrastination

Time – the great equaliser. We’re all different. Some of us were born into rich families, others with drop dead gorgeous looks! The one thing we all have is time, 24 hours to do whatever you want. Procrastinating is a waste of this valuable time. Wasting time creates stress and drama that no one needs. If you procrastinate frequently, then you’re missing out on all that you could be.

4. Indecisiveness

Choosing not to make a decision is a decision in itself. You’re letting life pass you by. Think about all the opportunities you’ve missed out on by not going for them. If you’re stuck between two options, just pick one. A bad decision is better than no decision at all. Make decisiveness a mental habit instead.

5. Satisfied with nothing less than perfection

Being a perfectionist is tough. Nothing is ever good enough. You remain stagnant. Never getting anywhere. This need for perfection can lead to indecisiveness and procrastination. That’s three terrible mental habits wrapped into one. Just stick to the decision you make. Don’t waste time making multiple decisions to make something perfect.

6. Underestimating yourself

It’s hard to keep negative thoughts out. Especially after a bad outcome. This can cause you to lower your expectations. And lower expectations will just get lower at each barrier. This makes life harder and harder. After a while, you won’t feel like you’re worthy enough to do anything. Remember what you’ve already accomplished and use it to fuel your future endeavors.

7. Beating yourself up

Mistakes are a blessing in disguise. The best way to improve is to learn from the errors you’ve already made. Don’t dwell on them. That’s a bad mental habit. Take note of what you did wrong and try to keep it in mind when a similar situation arises. You’ll never fail.

Misery. It’s inevitable. If you have poor mental habits you won’t be happy. All it takes is a few simple changes to influence your whole outlook on life. Think about how your mental habits are negatively affecting your mood and ultimately your success. Then change them.
